Our Presence

At Perspectives Joslin Campus, Sweeping Our Own Porch N.F.P. (S.O.O.P.) brings our mental wellness mission to life by helping students understand themselves, express their emotions, build confidence, and recognize how their choices affect themselves and others. Through guided conversations, journaling, art, and group activities, we give students opportunities to practice self-awareness, self-respect, communication, and accountability.

We believe the change we want to see starts with us. That means taking what we hear, see, and feel seriously—and being willing to examine our own actions as adults. When a student shares a concern, withdraws, struggles to participate, or arrives hungry, we have a responsibility to pay attention, ask questions without making assumptions, and follow through where we can. What students show us must help shape what we deliver.

Being intentional means every lesson, conversation, and activity has a purpose. We want students to leave with something they can use: words to explain a feeling, confidence to ask for help, a healthier way to respond to conflict, or a better understanding of their own needs and boundaries. We hold ourselves accountable by listening to their feedback, observing their progress, and adjusting our approach when something is not reaching them.

Our presence must be consistent, and our honesty must be rooted in care. We tell students the truth, including when a conversation is uncomfortable, while protecting their dignity. We can acknowledge their pain and still challenge behavior that causes harm. We also model accountability by admitting when we get something wrong and being honest about what we can and cannot provide.

Our message to the children is clear: We see you. We hear you. We take you seriously. And we will hold ourselves accountable to the same growth we ask of you. This is how we work to break the silence, interrupt harmful cycles, and make meaningful change begin with us.

It Takes A Village

Through our after-school program at Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus, we work with students in grades 6–12 and currently have 15 participants on our roster. Multiple students have shared that they do not have the winter clothing they need. Some of the young people we serve have experienced trauma or involvement with the child welfare system, making consistent care and trusted community connections especially meaningful.

These conversations have reinforced why our mentorship must extend beyond discussion. When a child finds the courage to share a need, we want to respond with action.

Our campaign, “Loud Contributions for Those That Suffer in Silence,” invites community partners to help provide essentials such as food, winter clothing, hygiene supplies, and transportation support. I have attached our campaign flyer to share more about this effort and the needs we are working to address.

We want our students to have room to learn, play, and enjoy their youth. Meeting their basic needs is part of protecting that opportunity.

Thank you for the care you are extending to our community.
