Youth Council Leadership Role In SYLC!

1. Role of a SYLC Mentor

• Provide emotional safety and a supportive presence.

• Encourage leadership, confidence, and personal growth.

• Facilitate discussions without judgment.

• Model accountability, respect, and emotional regulation.

• Reinforce S.O.O.P.’s healing-centered mission.

2. Trauma-Informed Approach

• Listen more than you speak.

• Validate feelings without trying to fix them.

• Avoid assumptions about a youth’s experiences.

• Reframe conflict as an opportunity for skill-building.

• Maintain predictable routines and structure.

3. Communication Guidelines

• Speak gently but confidently.

• Ask open-ended questions.

• Encourage youth to take the lead in problem-solving.

• Redirect harmful language toward self-compassion.

• Ensure that every voice is heard.

4. Handling Sensitive Moments

• Stay calm even when a youth becomes emotional.

• Offer grounding techniques (deep breathing, water break).

• Avoid forcing someone to share.

• Know when to escalate concerns to leadership.

• Maintain confidentiality unless safety is at risk.

5. Supporting Leadership Roles

• Coach youth leaders privately before group sessions.

• Celebrate effort, not just outcomes.

• Encourage younger members to grow into bigger roles.

• Guide conflict resolution between members.

• Promote teamwork and inclusion.

Mentor Code Of
Conduct 

Youth Council Leadership Code Of Conduct In SYLC!

1. Respect yourself and others at all times.

2. Maintain confidentiality: What is shared in SYLC stays in SYLC.

3. Listen actively and avoid interrupting others.

4. No bullying, gossiping, or exclusion.

5. Show up for meetings on time and prepared.

6. Use positive, affirming language when speaking to others.

7. Keep phones put away unless permitted by facilitators.

8. Be open to learning, growing, and trying new things.

9. Ask for help when you need it, you are not alone.

10. Take accountability for your actions and be honest about your feelings.

Consequences

We would rather stay away from heavy discipline, Harsh punishment would only be to terminate the individual from the council. SYLC would like to build restorative practices rather than punishment. This may include:

• Reflective journaling

• Mentor conversations

• Mediation between members

• Parent communication if necessary
